Earthquake Facts and Statistics


  1. On an average more than 14000 earthquakes, of magnitude 4.0 and more, occur every year.
  2. In last decade (2003-2012) there were an estimated ~790000 deaths due to earthquake.
  3. Highest casualty in an recorded earthquake was on January 12, 2010 in Haiti, when around 316000 people were killed in an earthquake of magnitude 7.0.
  4. Largest recorded earthquake in magnitude was one with magnitude 9.5 in Chile on May 22, 1960.
  5. An earth quake of magnitude 6.0 is 10 times bigger as compared to that of 5.0. And an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 is 100 times bigger as compared to that of 5.0. The magnitude scale is logarithmic.

    Bapu Nadkarni

    Rameshchandra Gangaram 'Bapu' Nadkarni is known for his record of most consecutive maiden overs, with 21 consecutive maiden overs bowled against England in 1964. He holds an average of 1.67 runs per over in his 41 match Test Career. Though he is mostly known for known for his bowling, he was an allrounder. He has an batting average of 40.36 in his 141 first class match career.

    He used to practice by putting a coin on the pitch and hitting it on every delivery.

    I didn't say she stole my money


    Why is it difficult for a computer program to understand natural language?

    There are many reasons. The sentence quoted is one of the most commonly used example in explaining the reason.

    "I didn't say she stole my money" has 7 different meanings depending on the stressed word.

    I didn't say she stole my money - someone else said it.

    I didn't say she stole my money - I didn't say it.

    I didn't say she stole my money - I only implied it.

    I didn't say she stole my money - I said someone did, not necessarily her.

    I didn't say she stole my money - I considered it borrowed, even though she didn't ask.

    I didn't say she stole my money - only that she stole money.

    I didn't say she stole my money - she stole stuff which cost me money to replace.

    There is something about Kishor Da

    Knowing the unknown about Kishor Da:
    1. Kishore Kumar and started his cinema career as a chorus singer at Bombay Talkies, where Ashok Kumar was a star. His first film as an actor was Shikari (1946), in which Ashok Kumar played the lead role.
    2. Music director Khemchand Prakash gave him a chance to sing the song Marne ki duayen kyon mangu for the film Ziddi (1948).
    3. Kishore Kumar's last song a day before he died was Guru O Guru, a duet with Asha Bhosle, for the film Waqt ki Aawaz composed by Bappi Lahiri.
    4. Kishore Kumar produced and directed a movie named "Badhti Ka Naam Daadhi" in 1978.
    5. During the Indian Emergency, Sanjay Gandhi asked Kishore Kumar to sing for a Congress rally in Mumbai, but Kishore Kumar refused. As a result, the Government put a ban on playing Kishore Kumar songs on the All India Radio or television. But Kishore Kumar refused to apologize. Finally, the ban was lifted after some prominent producers and directors lobbied against it.
    6. Kishore Kumar stopped singing for Amitabh Bachchan in the mid-1980s, after Amitabh didn't do a guest appearance in a film produced by him. He also stopped singing for the actor Mithun Chakraborty, after Yogeeta Bali divorced him and married Mithun.

    Moon and The Lunar Explorations

    1. The moon keeps nearly the same face towards the earth. We can see around 59 % of moons surface from earth.
    2. The moon is the only celestial body on which humans have landed.
    3. The First man made object to land on moon was not Apollo 11, (which of course was the first vehicle to carry human to moon, on July 20, 1969; marked by first person Neil Armstrong to land on moon) but it was unmanned Soviet probe Luna 2, on September 14, 1959. Luna 2 made a hard landing on the moon surface.
    4. The first (again unmanned) probe to photograph the far side of the moon was Luna 3, on October 7 1959.
    5. Luna 9, another unmanned Soviet probe, on February 3, 1966, was the second artificial object to reach moon surface and was the first probe to soft land on the Moon and transmit pictures from the Lunar surface.
    6. The first artificial satellite of moon was again a soviet probe Luna 10, launched on March 31, 1966.
    7. The first human being to see the far side of moon with their own eyes, on December 24 1968, were the Apollo 8 crew members Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders.
    8. The last man to stand on moon was Eugene Cernan, who was part of Apollo 17 mission. He walked on moon in December 1972.
    9. From mid 1960's to mid 1970's there wer 65 moon landings.
    10. In 1990, Japan became the third nation to orbit moon, with the Hiten spacecraft.
    11. On September 27, 2003, a Swedish designed European space agency satellite, SMART-1, was launched to orbit around the moon. On September 3, 2006, SMART-1 was deliberately crashed on moon's surface, ending its mission.SMART-1 measured just 1 meters across and weighed 367 kg.
